American Hazelnut (Corylus Americana). Photo taken early morning, March 7, 2013, temp in mid-30’s. This young shrub is just east in the right of way off of the StellaLou property. The hazels are scattered all about the property and there is a thicket that had been planted with five separate multi-stem shrubs. It appears that there are two types, a taller and a shorter type. Each shrub produces separate male and female flowers and, often, both. The catkins that you see in the photo are the male flowers. Better nut production can occur with cross pollination of another variety. As we move into the warmer season, I will be able to get a better sense of variety and production.
